Evaluation

Between myself and my group I believe that we have created our project in such a way that the usual expectations of a short film can be recognised and challenged. Our film "Fatality" is rated a 15 and fits into the pyschological drama genre. Our opening titles immediately set the tone of our film and introduces the disturbing narrative. The title sequence we have made is very typical of a short film and the intensity it creates is fitting for the atmosphere we wanted throughout our entire film. The chapter markers are a way of narrating the film and they are reminiscent of silent films and the powerful psychological nature of the films made by Quentin Tarantino. The repetition we have used involving the sequence at the beginning of each of the four days gives a smooth rhythm to our film. This is also quite typical within the genre of short films as it is an easy way to flow through a narrative. The repetition is also a reminder of fairytales and childhood tales such as “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. Another way we have kept the codes and conventions of short films the same is the changes of expectations of the audience within the narrative. With the use of the tickets, the telling of the fortunes was effective yet simple and left the audience wondering and making their own assumptions as what would happen next. The repetition of the tickets and fortunes with the resulting fates provide a sense of surrealism and a journey. The main way we have challenged the usual expectations of a short film is through the representation of gender. It is typical to have young female victims; however we have used a young male. We also used two female attackers instead of the typical male. I feel that we have used our research of short films to our advantage in respect to make our film recognisable as a short film, but individual as well.

The title sequence we created sets the tone for the narrative straightaway with the camera shot, movements and edits we used. The close ups of the clown leave the audience uncertain of the clowns surroundings, whereas the surroundings allow the audience to see every aspect of the clowns face. The numerous dissolves of the aspects of clown present many different angles of the clown and create a level of uncertainty within the mind of the viewer. We used a metallic sound effect and distorted it using an equaliser then repeated and layered the sound over the top of our title shots. This music also added to the level of uncertainty and mystery. The music steadily builds and gets louder as the credits of the production team and actors appear, this draws attention to the credits and the tension builds. We then used two graphics that fade into each other to create the word play for the title. As the film is about fate and destiny and the narrative leads to a climax of ambiguity, I came up with the name of “Fatality”. We then used a dissolve edit to change the shot from the word “Fate” to “Fatality”. We believed this would give an audience an idea of the narrative but also create pictures in their mind of what will actually happen.

We have used camera shots to create many emotions for the audience and to display our narrative. Whilst the shots in our title sequence create a level of uncertainty the master shot, or establishing shot, at the beginning of each of the four days forms a sense of anticipation and makes the audience familiar with the location. We used a close up of the coin in the man’s hand to make it very apparent to the view that he had picked up a coin. This is similar to the type of shot that would be used in an advertisement. We then used quite an unusual shot. We put the camera inside the box with the clown to view the lead male through the window. The use of the torch provided the reflection of the clown on the glass and we felt this produced an unusual yet brilliantly framed image. We used almost identical camera shots on the scene of the second, third and fourth days to reiterate the sense of repetition. One way we used camera shots to challenge gender representation is in the scene of the mugging. The framing of the two attackers on the left and the lead male on the right mediates the height difference between the two and although it would be assumed the male would be stronger as he is taller, he appears somewhat vulnerable. We then used a close up of the attacker in the green jumper after the biblical dialogue from the attacker in pink to show that even though she does not say anything, she is as important as the other attacker in the scene. This close up also presents her as quite sinister. During the scene in the fourth day when special effects are used to adapt the colours of the shots there is one shot in black and white that is from the point of view of the clown. This is obvious from the movement and positioning of the camera. This shot provides the audience with an alternative view of the surroundings. We also used camera shots to provide clever links to the narrative such as the scenes where the male drives home. We positioned the clown next to some roadwork signs with arrows on. This suggests that his path home has already been mapped out by the clown or his fate. The distortion of the clowns face at the end of the film makes the audience scared or even anxious as to what will happen to the male. The fact the camera zooms in on two different stages draws the audience closer to the clown, adding to emotions they were already feeling.

Camera movement also helped us create a frightening atmosphere. The backward tracking shots in the beginning sequences of each of the four days create suspense as to what is behind the camera and ahead of the character. On the second day we used a left-to-right pan to follow the character into the pub in the daylight. Then when it was dark we used a right-to-left pan. This creates a mirror image and seems as though someone has been waiting for him. The shot in the third day when we see the attacker following the man uses a forward tracking shot. This suggests that someone else was following the two of them. Like camera shots and framing, camera movements are an easy way of creating suspense and anxiousness in the viewer.

Our edits for the title sequence were constructed to create an air of uncertainty, and this is the same regarding the edit pace in the fourth day of the film with the reactions of the clown and man. The edits start of quiet slowly, but as the music and the tension builds, I cut the edits closer together to make them quicker. This adds to the tension and makes the viewer feel uneasy and confused. We used many fades in our film to create an ellipsis at different points, for example the time spent in the pub on the second day and from the attack to the car. This allowed us to move swiftly through the narrative.

Trying to control the lighting whilst filming was quite difficult as we only had a very limited time to film. We managed to get the majority of the shots filmed in the time we had but a few had to be filmed in darker conditions than we would of like so some shots had to be brightened/ darkened on the editing program as the transitions from light to dark were very obvious. The use of a torch to provide a spotlight and shadows around the clown were very successful. With the light filter on top the orange glow looks effective and natural. Because of the lack of natural light we had to film in Felixstowe over two separate days.

As a group we looked in depth into different music tracks to use. The distortion sound over our title sequence which steadily builds over the credits immediately sets the tone for the rest of the film and we wanted to continue this all of the way through. When the first chapter marker appears there is a sound bridge and a quiet carnival theme music starts and plays continuously over the film until the middle of the fourth day. The carnival music is off key and varies in tempo. The music creates a disjointed link to the narrative. In each scene there is a quiet sound produced by a triangle and this is where the man is first seen. The triangle acts like a cue. As the second scene is longer we get to hear more of the carnival music and as he leaves the pub and goes to his car the music tone deepens and a cello is played. This music suggests something dark and sinister may happen. The noise of the parking ticket being ripped of the car was modulated to grab the audience’s attention. Over the scene on the fourth day when the clown reacts with the male, there is a faster, unsystematic music playing, producing a sense of urgency and panic. The music that is heard of the scenes in the house and as the clown enters the bedroom is used to solely build suspense and make the audience nervous.

We decided that minimal dialogue in our film would give a better effect than if there was a lot of talking. We carefully selected a piece of religious text for one of the attackers to say. The meaning of the piece was deep and striking. We modulated the voice so it sounded almost not human. We did this so the audience would feel uncomfortable with their surroundings. The change in voice is not expected, much like many aspects of the narrative. Much like the chapter markers the religious text is similar to the type of language Tarantino uses in his films.

The use of costume in our film is another factor that challenges the usual expectations of a short film. It is very rare to find two attackers that will attack their victim in brightly coloured clothes; we felt this use of colour coding would be a good twist on the norm. The costume for the lead male was just a basic suit in which the tie changed to symbolise each of the four separate days. The suit and casting of the lead male leaves the character hard to judge and as he has no prominent features and does not stand out he is ambiguous to the audience. We used a whole costume for the clown to give the full effect of the character. The shot of clown of the roundabout shows the costume in its entirety. We felt that the use of a mask instead of face paint would look more realistic on camera.

The props that we used in our film were either hand made or made by ourselves. The box for the clown was the trickiest to make and design but with the help of my granddad we managed to build and decorate something that looked authentic. We used all of the props well in our scene and thought of everything down to the last detail such as the extension lead in all of the shots involving the box just in case it can be seen. Transporting the box was not easy as we had to tie town the boot of the car as it was too big to fit. We managed to overcome the transportation issues used all of the props to our advantage.

We chose the location of a seaside as it is remembered by most people as something that represents a fun and happy childhood. We selected this as it would unsettle the viewer to put a dark and scary narrative in such a cheerful setting. We waited for the amusements along the seafront to be quite empty so it would not be so loud and give the impression of a desolate place. We also chose the bedroom to be the place the man ran to as it has connotations of safety and is private. This like the seafront is unsettling for the audience as they may regard their bedroom as unsecure as the one in our film is breached by the clown. I think we chose appropriate locations to film and they are fitting for our narrative.

We did some research into the use of special effects, however as we had a limited budget we could only use what was available on the editing program. I adjusted the light settings to change the colour spectrum for the shots in the reaction sequence on the fourth day. This looks effective and helps add to confusion of the scene. It would have been nice to use more expensive and dramatic special effects and I hope to be able to use these on a future project.

Although our filming was successful we did encounter some problems. Background noise was an issue and on a number of the scenes we had to change the volume of the sound in the background. The lighting was also a problem and perhaps better planning would have allowed us to film more footage in a shorter amount of time. These were minor issues however and i feel that our project was created to the best of our ability in the time restraint given. 

The purpose of my film poster was to attract the attention of the audience to the cinema release of our film. I used a striking image of the right side of the clown’s face which was cropped and edited in “Photoshop”. The image allows the audience to make their own assumptions about the clown. I placed the picture on the right of the poster and the writing on the left. This makes everything on the poster easy to see/read. I used a bold font in capital letters for the title and the tag line. All of the writing on the poster is coloured white as this provides the biggest contrast against the black background. The black and white colour scheme makes the film seem mysterious whilst keeping the poster simple. As well the title and tagline I added the billing block to the poster which provides the audience with the names of the production team and cast. The text like the colours is kept simple. The nature of the poster regarding the text and picture is quite dark and menacing. This anchors the audience into their first assumption of the film from the poster. The poster is kept simple and would be used to attract a wide range of people to form an audience for the film.

When creating my film review I tried to stick to the traditional structure of a review. I used two columns for my text, added a picture to show what I was reviewing and put the credentials at the top of the page. The language I used in my review is too attract an audience with quite a high level of education. My review would feature in “The Times” meaning that it may attract a wider audience than the target audience I originally designed the film for. I have used a positive tone throughout my review, praising the film and adding only one criticism about running to the safety of his bedroom when being chased by the clown. I have written the review as someone who has only seen the film maybe once or twice and is recommending the film to a wider audience. The persona I undertook made it easier to write the review fairly rather than overly biased. I began by briefly introducing the film then reviewing the casting, setting and lighting. I then made references to cinematic successes such as “Big” starring Tom Hanks and “IT” written by Stephen King. I then provided references about fate from history and Greek mythology. I then concluded my review with a positive comment that would convince an audience to view the film.

Overall I feel that as a group we produced a short film that accurately met our brief and the two ancillary takes I created were done to the best of my ability. We all worked very hard to complete the task in the time given and I am very pleased that I came back and worked with the group again. This task has broadened my understanding of short films within the media and expanded my skills within the subject. 

Audience evaluation
So we could receive some feedback about our film we invited an audience to watch it. We ensured that the audience we gathered matched our criteria regarding our target audience. We left the audience alone in the room to watch the short film without any input from ourselves. We listened in to the comments that were made during the screening of the film however we are basing our feedback on the questionnaire that I produced.
By looking at the results of the questionnaires it seems as though every member of the audience would recommend our film and everyone understood that the theme of our film was fate and how it is unavoidable. People had varying views on the highlights of the film. Some people said that the scene of the mugging was very good, some said the editing of the clown and the lead male where he appears to be hallucinating was “great”. We also received positive feedback about the soundtrack, props and the actors we used. The audience also had different views on the negative points of the film. Some people mentioned that they felt there was nothing negative about the film saying “there are no negative points! It was excellent!”, however a couple of people mentioned that they had trouble reading the fortunes when they came out of the machine.
Everyone agreed towards the end of the film they felt scared and anxious. We also asked about the use of soundtrack, settings and costume as well as the editing and we received an average of 9/10 on all of these areas. We are happy that we arranged this screen and have taken all of t he feedback on board. We are also very pleased with the positive comments we had and feel that our film would be received very well by a wider audience. Although we understand that this response is not 100% reliable and people may feel they can not give an honest response or feel pressured to over exaggerate the positive points, and the environment the film was show in may not have given the appropriate effect that we wanted the film to have on the audience, the comments have given us all a greater confidence in our film.

The concept of “New media” has influenced our project in many different ways. Where “old media” such as books and celluloid film follow a linear form, new media is becoming increasingly more interactive. New media tends to be digital with unlimited possibilities. As its form is flexible and changeable the limit as to when a product is finished is down to personal choice and opinion. New media has influenced our project through such mediums as the website www.youtube.com which we used for research, and the blogs. Both of these media allow public opinion to be easily expressed and reach a diverse audience. New media has also created what is known as a media democracy. This is the right and the ability to produce media texts of a substantial quality due to digital technological advancements. As this democracy grows, the gap between professional and amateur production is closing and with so many texts being produced and distributed the ones that don’t fit in with someone’s personal taste are deemed as “noise” and become obsolete.
There are key relationships between our main task of producing a film and the ancillary tasks of the poster and review. The purpose of the film poster is to promote the film in question and is the first thing the audience sees regarding a new film and they are generally made to anchor the audience’s first impressions of the film. Where the poster is supposed to attract the audience towards the film, a film review can have the opposite effect. Positive reviews can be useful; however a negative review can have a greater impact. Viral reviews can be particularly effective as they can reach a broader audience than reviews in newspapers. It can also be said that some reviews are biased. In the case of Rupert Murdoch, who owns many media companies such as “20th Century Fox” and newspapers like “The Sun”, he can chose what the review says, so he is unlikely to print a bad review of a film that was made by his company. This means that some reviews are not 100% reliable or independent.

Media technology has influenced our project in many different ways. In the stages of research, construction, planning and even the evaluation, media technology played a huge part. Throughout the research we used websites such as www.youtube.com to study other short films. We also used cameras to take pictures of suitable costumes and locations, and our mobile phones to keep in touch throughout the planning and filming stages. When filming we used a video camera and during the editing we used a computer with the software Edit Pro 11. Our blogs are also a key piece of media technology in regards to our project. In every aspect of our film, from start to finish, we have used numerous different types of technology. It would have been impossible to complete our film without all of these.

Film Review

FATALITY

An unassuming businessman (Cross) goes about his business in the detached setting of a seaside town, when a seemingly automated clown draws his attention. The clown provides him with what seems to be a meaningless “fortune” that comes true. This continues for three days. On the fourth, the clown provides the man with his final fortune which results in a stalking sequence which ends with a climax full of suspense.

By casting a male victim and two female attackers Fatality” successfully questions the traditional gender representations within the genre. The typical chronological structure of the film permits Cross’ reactions to the events that occur to appear effortless.

The skilful use of a seaside town as the setting lets the audience question the fun and carefree nature of their local coast. The cleverly rehearsed movements of the clown leads the viewers to believe that the clown is in control of its own movements, perhaps even animatronic. Many would not consider it to be just a costume in a wooden box. The only criticism I have however would be if I was ever stalked by a clown, or anything for that matter, I would not allow myself to be trapped in my bed. Would You?

The use of lighting is key to moving the storyline along and to letting the audience know the context of the film. With the majority filmed in early evening, the time restraints of when to film to create the perfect lighting for each day were easily overcome. The editing of the piece is neat and concise. The particular highlight of the piece for me regarding editing would be that of the clown/ Cross reaction sequence on the fourth day. The dexterous use of special effects and transitions makes the sequence stand out from the rest of the film, and the daring edit pace leave the audience on the edge of their seats.

The film begins with the early theme of Penny Marshall’s classic starring Tom Hanks, “Big (1988) but soon echoes the ominous disposition of Stephen King’s “It(1990).  The menacing nature of the clown would frighten those too young to grasp the concept of its impossible reality. This being said, “Fatality” would be enjoyed by anyone old enough to see the “Saw” heptology on the big screen.

The film is also reminiscent of “The Fates” in Greek mythology. It is understood that even the Gods were afraid of the power of Moirae. This relates well to “Fatality”. The notion that fate is something that can not be controlled and to ultimately be afraid of is one that runs smoothly throughout the film. There are elements within the film that are also indicative of soothsayers that practice divination. By not using a fortune teller or an oracle figure, the use of the clown can also be used as an unsettling reminder to the audience that clowns are icons of childhood fear.

The fatalistic nature of the film is a theme that is becoming increasingly more popular; however the complex camera work and first-rate technical skills used by the PACK production team allow “Fatality” to be one of the best in its field. Overall the film is cleverly constructed and acted brilliantly. This short film is a definite must-see.

My film poster

To try and find the perfect image for my film poster I asked a member of the group to dress up in clown costume and I took many pictures from numerous angles. This allowed me to sit down and evaluate which picture would be best for my poster. I chose an image with a side view of the clowns face from the right. I cropped the image so only the side of the face, not the whole head was visible. I then used the editing program "Photoshop" to create a black background and adjust the colour of the eyes, teeth and skin. Once I had finished editing the picture I layered the text over the top and positioned it such a way that it was both easily visible and striking. 

This is a copy of my film poster. I have chosen to make the clown my dominant image as it is a key feature throughout the film. The side view of just the clowns head allows the audience to make their own assumptions about the nature of the clown itself. I have tried to keep with traditional conventions of a film poster with a striking title and catchy tag line that both stand out against the background. My billing block at the bottom of the poster mentions everyone who was involved in the film and follows the typical structure of one that would be shown on a real film poster. I have added the line at the bottom “Coming to cinemas soon” to make it clear that my poster is to advertise the cinema release, whereas the others in my group made posters for the release onto DVD, online and in film festivals.

Film Poster- "Top gun"

This is the film poster for “Top Gun” release in 1986. Once again the image is the main focus of the poster and the presence of a male and female straightaway suggests a love story, however the air force jacket the man is wearing suggests there is action involved which means this film will attract an audience of both genders. The two stars of the film have their names above the title of the film which is very small in relation to the rest of the poster. The name of the film has been designed in such away that it represents an air force emblem. The billing block is written in blue which gives a contrast against the dark background and the background of the writing and the bottom of the picture have been faded so they merged into each other. The billing block and the stars have been presented in the same colour as to not take away from any of the stars of production teams credibility. The directors name comes just after the production and distribution companies in the billing block, which is then followed by the actors. This is typical for billing blocks.

Film Poster- "Unknown"

This is the film poster for the film “Unknown” released in 2011. The image of the main character dominates this poster, along with the tagline “Take back your life”. The look in the male’s eyes is quite enigmatic. The polysemic nature could mean a number of things ranging from anger, to worry or even feeling lost. The title is relatively small in comparison to the tagline making it almost insignificant. Just above the title is the only clearly visible name on the poster which is of the main star, suggesting that he is the most significant and popular star in the film and will attract a wide audience. The billing block looks quite unorganised, this may have been done to symbolise the dysfunctional narrative of the film. The dull, blue adjusted colours in the poster create an air of sadness and perhaps mystery over the poster and the film itself. The date is also quite eye catching, although it is missing the year of release. Maybe reiterating the “unknown”.

Film Poster- "Carry on loving"

This is the film poster for “Carry on loving” released in the 1970’s. Immediately the title of the film with its bright colour and flowing font suggests a light hearted and entertaining film. The image only takes up around half of the poster and, instead of being a photograph or superimposition, is a cartoon all suggesting a light hearted narrative. The billing block is made up of the stars of the film, all in the same size and colour font, as if to not take away from any of the actor’s importance in the film. At the very top of the poster the producer is mentioned at the top, in the same sixed font as the billing block but in a different colour, this highlights his importance and credibility as a producer. The type of images and other visuals used in the poster make it clear that it was made years ago as the only films that tend to use cartoons in their posters nowadays are animations.

Film Poster- "In the name of the son"

This is the film poster for “In the name of the son”. The division of the poster by using two pictures gives the audience two perspectives as to what the film is about, the first being love or desperation, the second is of confusion or perhaps violence. The placing of the title in the middle of the poster is quite unusual as it would typically obstruct the images however this does not. Personally I think the colour coding of the text has a hidden meaning. The bold font that begins in white and ends in black may reflect the conflicting pictures, suggesting that not everything is “black and white” or as simple as it seems perhaps down to emotional ties. There are no links to the stars or director suggesting that this may be a showcase film for everyone involved. The billing block is also relatively small and lists the production team and then the actors, none of which are very well known. The use of males in the poster and what appear to be army uniforms would make the film appeal to a male audience, however the emotion being displayed would attract a female audience too.

Film Poster- "Wanted"

This film poster is for the film “Wanted” released in 2008. There are two images that have been superimposed together to create one image that dominates the poster. The use of guns in the image immediately creates a sense of action within the film and the inclusion of two of the main actors lets the audience know who the film centres on. The title of the film is centred at the top and written in capitals in a striking font however it takes up less than a quarter of the poster suggesting the image is the most important feature, this is also reiterated with the absence of a tagline. The only clearly visible names on the poster are that of three of the stars, suggesting that the director is not well known. The use of these names will attract the fans of these stars to the film. The billing block at the bottom of the poster is quite small in relation to many films and along with the title uses quite a striking font in capital letters. The most visible aspect of the billing block is the date the film is released. This pulls the attention of the audience down to the bottom of the poster and to the billing block to see who else was involved in the creation of “Wanted”, however the block is not easy to read, possibly suggesting that it is not an important feature of the poster.

Finalised editing

Once we had put the finishing touches to our individual sections and made any corrections and changes that were needed we joined all of the sections together. We then added the chapter markers to easily distinguish between the days and added the title sequence onto the beginning and the credits that fade in and scroll up at the end. We then mixed down our film and watched the finished product to check there were not and jump cuts or further mistakes we had made. With all of our scenes put together and all of the group happy, our film is almost complete, all we need to do is add the music and sound effects.

Titles

After our rough cut meeting, we all sat down and edited our titles. We used the numerous different shots of the clown that were filmed in the dark cupboard and used fades between them to show different angles of the clown which will immediately and a sense of uncertainty and bewilderment to our short film. We have use a bold font and made it white so it is easy to read over the dark scenes in the background. We have included the name of our production company and distributors as well as the actors and main title of our film. We chose the name “Fatality” as it connects well with the narrative. The visual of the title uses a play on words. In a very large font the word “FATE” appears which then fades into the title “FATALITY”. We thought this was quite clever and would also give the audience a clue what our film is about.

Editing- Rough cut meeting

We all sat down as a group when we all had finished editing our sections. We watched the sections in the order they needed to be in and decided that using chapter markers that stated “The First Day”, “The Second Day”, “The Third Day” and “The Final Day” would be best to distinguish between the separate sections. We then analysed each others scenes and picked up on any mistakes or changes that needed to be made. We then discussed the different forms of music and sound effects that we could possibly use.

Special effects

There are many different ways of creating special effects in films. One of the most popular is green/blue screen technology. The screens are used to project an image onto. This image can not be seen on the screen but can be seen on camera and film. This allows film makers to experiment with scenes and images that may not be physically possible to create. Pyrotechnics are also popular in action films in particular as they are easy ways of creating explosions. Mechanics and electronic works also can create life sized or over sized models of inanimate objects or subjects that may not be possible to get hold of or create in any other way. Because of our limited budget we were not able to create any of these, so we had to rely on our editing skills and resources to create our special effects, such as the changes in light and colour.

Editing

As a group we decided to talk responsibility for editing our own sections. Using the editing software Edit Pro 11, I started with the main master shot, and used fades and dissolves to show time passing as the lead male walk down the seafront and encountered the clown. I kept the edit pace quite slow as I wanted to use a very fast edit pace later on in my section and wanted to show a clear contrast. This part of my scene will be repeated throughout Karlene’s and Chloe’s to shop repetition in the narrative. Once the man has received his fate I used a lot of different angled, primarily medium and close up shots of the clown and male lead character. These interchanged between each other and the edit pace began increasingly fast to create confusing. I changed the colour of some of the shots into black and white, bright and dark colours, this also adds to the strangeness and confusion of the scene that reflects what the male character is feeling. Once I had finished that part I moved on to the scene when the audience realises the box is not plugged in. I quickened the pace of the main point of view shot of the wire to create a sense of panic then used a fade to show the man running back towards the empty box. The scene then cuts to him in the car and close ups of him putting his seatbelt on and looking in the rear-view mirror. I have then added the shot that zooms from the point of view of the man, on the clown who is visible through the back window of the car. Finally, my section ends on the sequence of shots when the man is driving home and sees the clown at intervals, such as on a round-a-bout and at the side of the road, on his journey home. It is at this point we will use a transition to link my section and Paige's together.

Shooting diaries- Day 5

Today was the final day of our filming. We all looked over the footage and were very happy with what we had so we moved of to the titles. We chose the location of a dark cupboard to film in and used the torch with the orange filter to create an eerie glow again. We used tilts and pans of the clown to create a scary and disturbing view.

Shooting diaries- Day 4

Once we had looked back over the footage, it was decided that I needed more scenes for my section as it would be a lot shorter than the others with footage we had already. The group gathered at my house and we once again set up the box. We then managed to film the bulk of the scenes that will appear in the part of my section when the lead character appears to be hallucinating. By filming at my house we managed to get a lot filmed quite quickly as the props and everything we needed were to hand. The change in location will have to be managed carefully when we are editing.

Shooting diaries- Day 3

On our third day of filming we went back to Felixstowe to complete the filming that needed to be done. In the time we were there we managed to complete the mugging scene for Chloe’s section, both of the ending’s for the fates in Karlene’s section and all of the scenes that involved the car we were using. As a last minute decision we also managed to film the scenes of the clown as the car drives past. The filming ran smoothly as we were a lot more prepared.

Shooting Diaries- day 2

Today at Felixstowe seafront we managed to get most of the scenes of the lead character and the clown for the beginning of Chloe’s, Karlene’s and my scenes, however trying to complete everything was not possible as the daylight quickly faded and it was difficult to see the details on the camera, so we all agreed to go back to Felixstowe another day to finish everything. We completed all of the scenes that included the box that the clown was in as it was quite difficult to transport and we didn’t want to take it there again.

Shooting diaries- Day 1

Today we began our filming at Paige’s house. Our aim was to get all of the scenes that were meant to be filmed here done today and we completed this aim. Although we managed to get it all filmed it did take a long while as we were not very organised and did not have a specific order in which to film the scenes. We managed to film all of Paige’s end sequence of the lead male running into the house, up the stairs, into the bathroom and hiding from the clown in the bedroom. We also made the effort to use “male orientated” props in the bedroom to make it look as if it belonged to a man as they décor in the bedroom that we used was quite feminine. We all know that we need to be more organised and prepared for filming at the seafront tomorrow as we have a lot of scenes to film and not a lot of time to do so.

Making the Props

Once I had picked up the frame for the box we decided it needed decorating to look more realistic as an old, rustic seaside amusement. We picked up a pot of dark brown paint and I put the box together. I then used an old car sponge to paint the box. The use of the sponge instead of a brush made the box look old and worn which was the look we wanted to acheive. Once the brown paint had dried I used gold acryllic paint around the edge of the window and the slot for the tickets to come out of. This made the box look more like an antique and old- fashioned.

Pre Production Meeting 3

Today as a group we made many of our final decisions. We finally cast a close friend of Paige’s family as our lead male character as he has amateur experience in acting. We also decided on the days that we were all free in the February half term and chose the times we would meet to film. Felixstowe and Paige’s house were also confirmed as our final locations to film, and responsibility for our own scenes, dialogue, lighting and props was distributed amongst the group.

Sound and music ideas

We have already decided that there will be very minimal dialogue throughout our film. Our main focus is on the different types of music we can use. Depending on the pace of our edits and the different shots we use, as a group we feel that a carnival/ circus theme song, that may be modulated, would be perfectly fitting for our short film. By changing the pace or tone of the song we can add more depth to the scenes. Some of the pieces of music we have found are linked below.  We have also considered using a creepy clown’s laugh in our film to add more suspense of fear, depending on the context, however this will have to be decided nearer the time of editing.

Lighting

As our narrative runs over four consecutive days we considered filming over four days too. However we soon realised this was not possible as people in the group had previous commitments and it would not be easy to gather all of the actors, props and group in the same place at the same time over four days. This means we will have to try and fit the filming for all four days in one afternoon. All of the scenes that need to be filmed on the seafront will be filmed in daylight. However the scenes like those driving back in the car, coming out of the pub and the attack will be filmed in the dark to create an ellipsis in time. We will also use the torch in the box to try and create different light effects around the clown to create a scary atmosphere.

Props

As a group we decided that it would be best if the clown was contained in a box, giving it the feel of that of an old fashioned mechanical fortune teller. The group and I spoke to my granddad who used to be a carpenter and he thought that hardboard would be the best material to use as it was reasonably lightweight and cheap. Two small scale prototypes were made to see which would be the best way to fasten the frame together. After trying hinges and glue we decided that by bolting the frame together it would be easy to construct and take apart and also easy to transport. The frame only has 3 sides allowing access for the clown and the bottom and top are both open. These open sides will later be covered in black cloth to block out any light. The window in the box will be covered with Perspex’s so the clown can see out and the audience can see in. The dimensions of the box are below.




















Another prop we will use is a torch. This will be kept inside the box, along with a chair for the clown to sit on, giving the right framing for the clown and to provide different forms of lighting for the scenes. The torch will be covered in an orange plastic filter to allow the light to appear as a glow, creating an eerie effect. We will also take an extension lead that will stretch from the back of the box to a plug socket. This prop is crucial for the scene when the audience realise the box is not plugged in. The lead character will also carry a wallet for the attackers to take during the mugging scene and a set of keys for both the scenes at the car and the beginning of the scenes at the house. I have also created the four tickets that will be used for the scenes when the lead male receives his fortunes. These will be printed on card that looks aged to give the impression that the fortunes are as old as the machine. The tickets also feature a picture of a clown to link in with the clown in the box. I have also created a fake parking ticket that will be stuck onto the car at the end of Karlene's scene.

Exploration of locations

Today I decided to view some locations that may be suitable for filming. It was quite difficult to find somewhere suitable for the seaside scenes as although we do not live far away from the coast, there are not many locations that could provide us with appropriate facilities and views for filming. When I came back to the group with the suggestion of Felixstowe seafront we all decided that that would be the best location for our film as it is not too far away and would be easy to transport all of our props and actors too. The four of us also concluded that trying to film in all four of our houses would take up too much of the limited time we had to film, so we settled on using Paige’s house for those scenes.

Costume

Our first and main aspect to consider with the costumes is the clown. We all decided that we need to use a full suit for the clown in case we use any long shots or tilts that feature the clown. Whether we will use a mask or make up for the face of the clown has yet to be decided, although the use of a mask will look more realistic. For our lead character we have concluded that we will dress him in a suit, but change the colour of his tie and/or shirt to distinguish between the individual days of the narrative. This creates suggests that the lead character is perhaps a businessman or something similar which is what we are trying to portray as it seems out of place for a businessman to be at the seaside, also adding to the unsettling nature of the narrative. As a group we opted for the two attackers to be dressed in brightly coloured clothes as this is against the stereotypical view of a person who would attack someone. We will use the medium of costume to reiterate the narrative point of our short film

Narrative point of locations

As the narrative point of our film is centred on the idea of fate and fortunes, we all sat down together and tried to come up with a local place that would be suitable for us to film in. we chose the location of a seaside as they are usually associated with fun and harmless excitement. As our film is quite unsettling we could take the location out of context and use it with in our film. For the scenes that take place in a house we have decided to use a room in all of our houses as the change in décor and location to add to the abstract and disconcerting nature of our narrative.

Casting decisions


For our film we need four actors/ characters. These are;
1.       Lead Character
2.     Attacker 1
3.     Attacker 2
4.     Clown
As a group we have decided to use the idea of challenging the representation of gender. As our lead character we will use a tall male around 20-25 years old. The young male lead character will challenge the representation as it is usually a young female who falls victim in films. We will also use two teenage females to play the attackers as this will also challenge the representation of gender as it is normally males who play violent, abusive, controlling characters. The clown will be played by a suitable actor depending on how we will portray the clown. We have not yet decided whether to use a costume, mask or face paint/ make up to depict the clown character. Anybody else who features in the film will be the general public who happen to appear in the scenes. We will make them aware of our presence and allow them to decline their appearance in the film.

Distribution of our film

As our film is not a feature film it would not be distributed into cinemas and then onto DVD/ Blu Ray. As it is a short film under 15 minutes our film would be distributed on the internet, either on a private website or a popular website such as www.youtube.com. Using the internet, our film would be more likely to be seen by our target audience of teenagers and young adults as it is easily accessible and free.

Research into film distribution

Once a film has been produced, it is distributed through the relevant means. Feature films tend to appear in cinemas. The time the film spends in the cinema depends on its popularity. Once the film has finished its stint on “the big screen”, after a short period of time the film would be released on DVD/ Blu Ray to rent/ buy. This method of distribution is the most profitable as it allows the public to pay to see the film in the cinema, then, if they enjoyed it, buy it on disc. The accessibility of the film on disc also permits other members of the public who have not previously seen the film to buy it. Other mainstream films go straight to DVD as the production company and distributors do not think they will benefit from the films time in the cinema. There is also an opportunity for these films to appear on cable and terrestrial television. Most short films tend to distributed over the internet as this is where they will receive the most exposure to the target audience. Many short films also have the opportunity to gain more exposure from film festivals.
